When Pushpa was first conceptualized, it was intended to be a single film. However, due to its expansive storyline, director Sukumar decided to split it into two parts. Fans expected Pushpa 2 to carry forward the conflicts and subplots from the first installment, providing a satisfying conclusion. To everyone’s surprise, a third installment, Pushpa 3, was also announced recently.
Despite Pushpa 2 raking in impressive box office numbers, the film has left many fans, especially in the South, disappointed. Sukumar, known for his unique storytelling style and strong fan base in Telugu cinema, faced criticism for delivering a sequel that many felt lacked his trademark treatment.
Audiences expressed dissatisfaction with the film’s content, feeling it prioritized commercial success over storytelling or continuity. Unlike sequels such as Baahubali 2 and KGF 2, which delivered cohesive narratives and impactful storytelling, Pushpa 2 was criticized for its disjointed plot, unnecessary additions, and weak characterization—particularly of its villains. The film’s artificial tone and seemingly stitched-together portions further disappointed viewers.
Sukumar, celebrated for his previous works like Rangasthalam and Pushpa: The Rise, which struck a balance between critical acclaim and commercial success, faced backlash for Pushpa 2. While the film amassed significant earnings, it failed to live up to the expectations set by its predecessor, tarnishing the franchise’s reputation.
In light of these reactions, Sukumar has decided not to proceed with Pushpa 3, opting to move on from the franchise altogether. The director is now set to begin work on his next project, RC 17, signaling a fresh start and an opportunity to rebuild his creative legacy.
