The Goa government has officially made the Hindi historical drama Chhaava tax-free in the state. Starring Vicky Kaushal as the legendary Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the film hit theatres on February 14 and has been receiving widespread acclaim.

Goa CM’s Statement on ‘Chhaava’

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday to share the announcement, highlighting the film’s significance. He emphasized that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s sacrifice is an inspiration to all.

“I am pleased to announce that ‘Chhaava,’ a film showcasing the life and sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be tax-free in Goa. The movie brilliantly portrays his valor and courage in defending Dev, Desh, and Dharma. His legacy, as the second Chhatrapati of Hindavi Swarajya who fiercely fought against the Mughals and Portuguese, continues to inspire us all,” Sawant wrote.

Madhya Pradesh Follows Suit

Notably, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also declared the film tax-free in his state. The announcement coincided with the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire and father of Sambhaji Maharaj.

About ‘Chhaava’

Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava is an adaptation of the iconic Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant. The film stars Vicky Kaushal in the titular role, alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in pivotal roles.

Since its release, Chhaava has garnered praise from both audiences and critics, with its powerful storytelling and historical grandeur. It is poised to become the first Bollywood film to surpass the ₹200-crore mark in 2025, already emerging as the year’s highest-grossing Hindi film, surpassing Sky Force (₹112 crore), starring Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya.

With its tax-free status in multiple states and growing audience support, Chhaava continues to cement its place as one of Bollywood’s most significant historical dramas.
