World Asthma Day 2024: Raising Global Awareness

Date:

World Asthma Day (WAD) is observed annually on the first Tuesday of May to raise global awareness about asthma. Organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), the day aims to educate individuals living with asthma, enabling them to manage their condition effectively. It also calls on healthcare professionals to recognize the continued, yet preventable, burden of asthma-related illness and death.

Asthma is the most prevalent chronic non-communicable disease, affecting over 260 million people worldwide and causing approximately 450,000 deaths each year.

2024 Theme: “Asthma Education Empowers”

This year’s theme, selected by GINA, underscores the power of education in asthma management. By equipping patients with accurate information, they can better understand their condition, adhere to treatment plans, and know when to seek medical care.

History of World Asthma Day

GINA was established in 1993, and the first World Asthma Day was held in 1998. Since then, the day has brought together patients, doctors, and organizations globally to highlight the struggles faced by those with asthma and promote collaborative solutions.

Why It Matters

In a statement on its website, GINA emphasized the importance of empowering people with asthma through education and urged healthcare professionals to stay informed about evidence-based management strategies. This ensures that patients receive accurate guidance and the best possible care.
