Milk is one of the most important parts of our daily diet, but sadly, it is also one of the most commonly adulterated foods. Water, starch, detergents, synthetic milk, and even harmful chemicals are sometimes mixed with milk to increase quantity and shelf life. Consuming such milk can be dangerous for health, especially for children and elderly people.
The good news is that you don’t always need a lab to check the purity of milk. With a few simple tests, you can find out whether the milk you are drinking is pure or adulterated.
1. Water Test
Take a drop of milk on a clean, slanted surface like glass. Pure milk will flow slowly and leave a white trail behind. If it flows too quickly without leaving any mark, water may be mixed in it.
2. Urea Test
Put one teaspoon of milk in a test tube and add half a teaspoon of soy flour or arhar dal powder. After 5 minutes, dip red litmus paper into the mixture. If it turns blue, it means urea is present.
3. Detergent Test
Mix 5–10 ml of milk with the same amount of water and shake well. If thick foam or lather forms, it indicates detergent has been added.
4. Synthetic Milk Test
Taste a small drop of milk. If it feels bitter, soapy, or gives an unusual aftertaste, it may be synthetic milk. Sometimes synthetic milk also gives a yellowish color when heated.
5. Starch Test
Add a few drops of iodine solution (tincture of iodine) to 2–3 ml of milk. If the color turns blue, it shows the presence of starch.
Why These Tests Matter
These simple methods can help you quickly identify adulteration at home without any special equipment. Adulterated milk can lead to stomach problems, food poisoning, or even long-term health issues if consumed regularly.
Government authorities like FSSAI also suggest checking packaging details such as license number, batch number, and expiry date when buying packet milk. If you still doubt its quality, you can report it through their toll-free helpline.
Milk is supposed to nourish, not harm. With these easy checks, you can make sure your family drinks safe and pure milk every day.
