Can Excess Salt Lead to Stomach Cancer? Here’s What You Need to Know

Date:

What is food without salt? It’s the essential ingredient that enhances the flavor of every dish. Meals seem bland without these tiny white crystals. But how much salt is too much? Excessive salt intake can have negative effects on your health. It’s important to monitor sodium levels to manage blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and more. Did you know that too much salt can even lead to stomach cancer? Stomach cancer, the fifth most common cancer in India, is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, making treatment outcomes less favorable. Preventing the development of stomach cancer is crucial.

Causes of Stomach Cancer
Most people consume about 4-6 grams of salt per day, according to Dr. Samir Gupta, HOD of Oncosurgery at DPU Super Specialty Hospital in Pune. A global study involving 37,000 individuals revealed that a high salt intake increases the risk of stomach cancer by 1.5 to 2 times compared to those with normal salt consumption. Animal studies on rats have confirmed this link.

Foods high in salt include salted fish, salted meats, pickles, and soy sauce, which is often used in oriental cuisine. These foods, when consumed in excess, can contribute to the risk. Additionally, foods high in chilies and those consumed at high temperatures also increase the risk of stomach cancer.

How Salt Affects Stomach Cancer
Excess salt damages the stomach lining, making it more susceptible to acid damage. Over time, this can cause the stomach lining to change to an “intestinal type,” which is more prone to cancer development. Salt also creates an environment that allows Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria linked to stomach cancer, to thrive in the stomach. These bacteria are well-known contributors to the risk of stomach cancer.
