Laxman Utekar’s Chhaava narrates the inspiring journey of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Vicky Kaushal. The film begins with the passing of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, leaving Sambhaji to uphold his father’s legacy. His bold attack on the Mughal stronghold of Burhanpur enrages Aurangzeb (Akshaye Khanna), triggering a fierce battle. However, betrayal within the Maratha ranks leads to Sambhaji’s capture, setting the stage for a gripping climax.

Strengths:

Vicky Kaushal delivers a powerful performance, carrying the film with his intense portrayal. His commanding screen presence and emotional depth shine, particularly in the climax. Rashmika Mandanna plays a limited but effective role. Akshaye Khanna is decent as Aurangzeb, while Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, and Diana Penty offer adequate support.

Drawbacks:

Despite its historical depth, the film’s execution falters. The screenplay lacks sharpness, making the first half feel sluggish. The war sequences could have been more engaging, and the betrayals deserved a stronger emotional buildup. Aurangzeb’s character lacks depth, diminishing the conflict’s intensity.

Technical Aspects:

Laxman Utekar’s direction is solid but could have benefited from a tighter screenplay. A.R. Rahman’s music is decent, and the dialogues make an impact. The cinematography is functional but not visually striking.

Verdict:

Chhaava is a decent historical drama elevated by Vicky Kaushal’s stellar act and a strong climax. However, its slow pacing and stretched narrative may not appeal to all. History lovers will find it engaging, while casual viewers might find it passable.
