Suriya’s Kanguva debuted worldwide yesterday with soaring expectations as Kollywood’s next big pan-India release. However, the film’s reception has been unexpectedly negative, and opening revenues have underperformed. Following a lukewarm Day 1, Kanguva saw a shocking decline on Day 2, signaling a challenging road ahead at the box office.
The film grossed over 40 crores worldwide on its first day, marking the highest opener in Suriya’s career. However, this figure is far below the pre-release business of 400 crores. Kanguva’s word-of-mouth feedback mirrors the initial reception of Indian 2, which faced similar criticism but managed respectable weekend numbers. Unfortunately, Kanguva’s Day 2 box office appears to have plummeted, with gross earnings anticipated to fall to single digits.
Trade analysts are cautious, speculating that Kanguva may struggle to reach a 100-crore gross in its total run at this rate, a significant setback for a film initially aiming for the 1000-crore benchmark set by blockbusters like Baahubali. Additionally, the film’s producer has faced online criticism due to previous comments praising the film’s potential. If trends persist, Kanguva may end up a substantial loss for everyone involved in the project.
