The highly anticipated L2 Empuraan, the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, continues its impressive run at the box office. According to trade reports, the film collected ₹2.53 crore net in India on its second Friday, pushing its total domestic earnings to ₹90.78 crore net.
After an explosive ₹21 crore opening on March 27, the film raked in ₹88.25 crore net in its first week. While daily collections have now dipped into single digits, L2 Empuraan has remained steady. With the weekend ahead, all eyes are on whether it can regain momentum.
Record-Breaking Success for Malayalam Cinema
The Mohanlal-Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer has been rewriting box office history. L2 Empuraan not only outperformed Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava in its opening weekend, thanks to its Thursday release advantage, but it has also become the first Malayalam film to reach ₹100 crore in worldwide share.
With its ₹250 crore+ global box office haul, the film has now surpassed Manjummel Boys to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever. It has also secured a spot on the list of highest-grossing Indian films of 2025.
Controversy Surrounding the Film
Despite its massive success, L2 Empuraan has faced its share of controversy. The film delves into the backstory of Prithviraj’s character, Zayed Masood, and includes a fictionalized version of the 2002 Gujarat riots, which sparked backlash. Following the criticism, the filmmakers voluntarily implemented 24 cuts.
Addressing the controversy, actor-politician Suresh Gopi denied allegations that the ruling party pressured the makers into the edits, stating in a parliamentary session that the decision was independent.
Featuring Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier in pivotal roles, L2 Empuraan continues to dominate both headlines and the box office. Will the weekend push its domestic total past the ₹100 crore mark? Fans are eagerly waiting to see!
