May 2025 Full Moon: The Flower Micromoon
The full flower moon will reach its peak on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 12:56 p.m. (ET), according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. While the moon officially turns full during the day, it will appear bright and full from Sunday night (May 11) through early Tuesday (May 13).
This particular full moon is also a micromoon, meaning it occurs when the moon is at apogee, the farthest point from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it will appear about 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than a typical full moon.
To best view it, find a spot with a clear view of the horizon.
Why is it called the “Flower Moon”?
The name “Flower Moon” reflects the abundance of blooming flowers in May, especially across North America. The name is rooted in Algonquin traditions and was popularized through a mix of Native American, Colonial American, and European influences.
