National Technology Day is celebrated annually on May 11 to commemorate India’s significant strides in science and technology, particularly the successful nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998. This historic achievement marked India’s entry into the group of nuclear-armed nations and showcased its technological strength.
The day also celebrates other technological milestones from May 11, 1998, including the first successful flight of India’s indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 and the successful test launch of the Trishul missile by DRDO.
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee coined the term “National Technology Day” to honour the contributions of Indian scientists and engineers.
Purpose and Celebrations
Since 1999, the Technology Development Board (TDB) has commemorated this day by recognizing and awarding innovations that contribute to national progress. Educational institutions across the country organize seminars, workshops, and competitions to encourage students to explore science and technology.
