Manila: The Philippines has reported 128,834 dengue cases and 337 fatalities since January, according to the Department of Health (DOH). Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo highlighted that the number of dengue cases from January to July 27 this year is 33% higher than the same period last year, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Despite the increase in cases, the number of dengue-related deaths has decreased compared to last year. Domingo attributes this trend to early medical consultations and improved hospital case management. However, four out of the country’s 17 regions have experienced a continuous rise in dengue cases over the past six weeks.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa has urged citizens to eliminate containers that can harbor mosquito larvae. Dengue is a common disease in the Philippines, particularly during the rainy season from July to October, when fluctuating weather, flooding, and stagnant water create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. These insects thrive in water-filled containers and certain plants, such as bananas.
