After his appearance in Deva—a Hindi remake of the Malayalam film Mumbai Police (2013)—Shahid Kapoor is reportedly gearing up for yet another remake. According to the latest buzz in Bollywood circles, Shahid will be joining hands with Ishaan Khatter for the Hindi adaptation of Prem Kumar’s Meiyazhagan.
Despite the fact that post-COVID audiences have grown less receptive to remakes, Bollywood seems determined to revisit this formula. With easy access to regional content, viewers now prefer watching original versions, which has led to several Hindi remakes like Cuttputlli, Vikram Vedha, Bholaa, and even Shahid’s own Deva, underperforming at the box office.
Nevertheless, the industry appears undeterred. While Meiyazhagan—which starred Karthi and Arvind Swamy—was critically acclaimed across languages, it failed to make a strong commercial impact.
In the upcoming remake, Shahid Kapoor is expected to take on Arvind Swamy’s role, while Ishaan Khatter will reportedly step into Karthi’s shoes. Although no official confirmation has been made yet, an announcement is anticipated soon.
With Bollywood continuing to take its chances with remakes, it remains to be seen whether this project will break the recent pattern—or fall victim to it.
