Summer brings a welcome break from school and routine for kids, but it also comes with its own set of challenges for parents. Balancing screen time, ensuring proper hydration, maintaining outdoor safety, and keeping nutrition on track all require extra care during the warmer months.
With longer days and fewer structured activities, children often end up spending more time on screens. Dr. Suma Uday, Senior Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, recommends limiting screen time to 1–2 hours a day. “Excessive screen time can affect sleep, posture, and mood,” she explains. Instead, encourage kids to engage in hands-on activities like reading, arts and crafts, or board games. Maintaining a consistent routine—with set times for meals, rest, study, and play—also helps ensure children get the 9 to 11 hours of sleep they need, depending on age.
Hydration is another critical summer concern, as children may not recognize when they’re thirsty. Dr. Uday emphasizes the importance of offering fluids regularly. “Water, coconut water, and fresh juices should be given often,” she advises.
When heading outdoors, plan activities during cooler times of the day—early mornings or late evenings—to avoid peak heat. Dress kids in lightweight cotton clothing, use hats for shade, and play in sheltered areas. Sunscreen is generally not required unless a child has very light skin or specific sensitivities.
Nutrition plays a key role in keeping kids healthy over the summer. Seasonal fruits like watermelon, mango, and papaya are great additions to their diet. Dr. Uday also suggests including immunity boosters such as turmeric, ginger, and curd. Replacing junk food with wholesome snacks like fruit chaat, yogurt smoothies, or nuts can keep energy levels up and support overall well-being.
Dr. Uday’s Top 5 Summer Health Tips for Kids:
- Limit Screen Time: Cap it at 1–2 hours daily. Encourage creative play and interactive family activities.
- Stay Hydrated: Offer fluids frequently—don’t wait for kids to ask.
- Play Safely Outdoors: Avoid the midday heat; choose cool clothing and shaded areas.
- Snack Smart: Go for nutrient-rich options like fruits, yogurt, and nuts instead of packaged snacks.
- Watch for Heat Stress: Look out for signs like fatigue, irritability, or dizziness. Respond with rest, fluids, and a cool environment.
By taking a few simple precautions, parents can help kids enjoy a safe, active, and healthy summer.
