A key meeting was held on Sunday in Hyderabad with several exhibitors in attendance to discuss the ongoing debate over releasing films on a rental basis versus a percentage-sharing model. The majority of major players in the Nizam region are in favor of the percentage-based system, while top producers remain opposed, fearing it could reduce their first-week revenue.
However, the meeting lacked full representation, as many exhibitors and distributors were absent. A clear resolution can only emerge once all stakeholders—including distributors, who face their own challenges in the current exhibition model—have shared their views.
A tentative deadline of June 1st has been set, but the core issue remains unresolved: who will take charge to streamline the system?
Single-screen theaters in urban areas, which charge high rents, are against the percentage system. Conversely, single-screen owners in smaller towns and B, C centers are supporting the move. In Andhra Pradesh, only East Godavari exhibitors favor the percentage model, whereas most Nizam region exhibitors support it.
To move forward, district-wise meetings are necessary to gather comprehensive feedback. A strong and representative committee must be formed to make a balanced, collective decision that benefits exhibitors, distributors, and producers alike.
All eyes are now on how this issue will unfold—especially with multiple film releases scheduled for June.
