The ad-free streaming experience that Amazon Prime Video users in India have long enjoyed is about to change. Starting June 17, 2025, the platform will begin showing limited advertisements during movies and shows — a move already implemented in countries like the US, UK, Japan, and Mexico.
Subscribers who wish to continue watching content without ads will need to pay an additional fee: ₹129 per month or ₹699 annually, on top of the existing ₹1,499 yearly subscription.
Emails notifying users of this change have already begun rolling out. While Amazon positions this as a global strategy, it remains to be seen how Indian viewers will respond — especially in a market where illegal streaming is already widespread. The success of this shift may depend on how much value users place on an uninterrupted viewing experience.
