Directed, written, produced, and starring Kangana, Emergency is a biographical political thriller about the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film explores the final years of her tenure, focusing on the Emergency period and Operation Bluestar.
Kangana portrays Indira Gandhi, with an ensemble cast including Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Mahima Chaudhary as Pupul Jayakar, and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.
A review excerpt from Hindustan Times highlighted the balanced approach of the film, noting that it neither sought to whitewash nor tarnish Indira Gandhi’s actions during the Emergency. The performances were also praised, particularly Anupam Kher’s restrained portrayal and Satish Kaushik’s impactful performance in a brief role.
