Karthika Masam: Significance of Amla Deepam and Flour Deepam

Karthika Masam is one of the most auspicious months in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Falling during the Hindu lunar month of Kartik (October–November), this month is considered ideal for spiritual practices, charity, and performing special rituals. Devotees believe that observing rituals during Karthika Masam brings prosperity, happiness, and spiritual growth.

Two popular traditions during this month are Amla Deepam and Flour Deepam, both of which hold deep religious significance.

Amla Deepam

Amla Deepam involves lighting lamps using Amla (Indian Gooseberry) oil or juice. Amla is considered highly sacred and is believed to purify the surroundings while bringing good health and longevity to devotees. Families typically perform this ritual in the evening, chanting prayers and offering Amla fruit to the deity. Lighting the Amla Deepam symbolizes the removal of darkness and ignorance from one’s life.

Flour Deepam (Ariselu/Deepam made from Flour)

Flour Deepam is another unique ritual observed during Karthika Masam, where lamps are made using rice flour or wheat flour dough. These lamps are usually shaped like small cups and filled with ghee or oil before being lit. Flour Deepam signifies devotion and humility, reminding devotees to remain grounded while seeking divine blessings. Many believe that performing this ritual strengthens family bonds and brings prosperity to the household.

Do’s and Don’ts During Karthika Masam

  • Do: Light lamps daily, visit temples, donate to the needy, and perform holy baths in rivers.
  • Don’t: Avoid negative thoughts, unnecessary arguments, and non-vegetarian food on auspicious days.

Karthika Masam, with rituals like Amla Deepam and Flour Deepam, is a period to seek blessings, cultivate discipline, and enhance spiritual well-being. Observing these rituals with devotion ensures harmony, prosperity, and a deeper connection with the divine.
