National Technology Day 2023: Honouring Innovation and Scientific Excellence

National Technology Day is celebrated annually on May 11 to honour the remarkable achievements of Indian scientists, engineers, and innovators. The day marks a significant milestone in India’s journey in science and technology and holds special relevance, especially in challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, where technology played a vital role in saving lives through innovations like vaccines and life-support equipment.

Historical Significance:
The origins of this observance trace back to May 11, 1998, when India conducted a series of successful nuclear tests at Pokhran under Operation Shakti, establishing India as a nuclear power. Then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared the day as National Technology Day in recognition of this achievement. Since 1999, the Technology Development Board (TDB) has commemorated this day annually by promoting technological advancements across the country.

Key Events on May 11, 1998:

  • Test flight of India’s first indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 in Bangalore.
  • Successful test launch of the Trishul missile.
  • Execution of Pokhran-II, India’s second nuclear test series, including five nuclear explosions (one fusion and four fission bombs), marking India’s emergence as a full-fledged nuclear state.

About Operation Shakti:
Also known as Pokhran-II, Operation Shakti was a series of five nuclear bomb tests conducted by India in May 1998. The first three tests (two fission and one fusion) took place on May 11, followed by two more on May 13. The devices were named Shakti I to Shakti V. This operation followed Pokhran-I, codenamed Smiling Buddha, which was India’s first nuclear test in 1974.

National Technology Day 2024 Theme:
The theme for 2024 is “From Schools to Startups: Igniting Young Minds to Innovate”, focusing on nurturing innovation among students and encouraging youth-driven startups to strengthen India’s position as a global startup hub.

(Note: Another theme, “Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future”, was also announced by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, continuing the broader mission of promoting sustainability through innovation.)

Celebrations and Activities:

  • Awards: TDB presents National Awards to individuals and institutions for excellence in indigenous technology.
  • Participating Bodies: Various departments like the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, CSIR, and DBT are actively involved.
  • Events: Competitions (essays, speeches), exhibitions, and theme-based articles are organized across schools and institutions to raise awareness.
  • Objective: To inspire students and recognize the contributions of scientists and researchers to India’s technological advancement.
