Vijay Deverakonda Issues Apology After Backlash Over Comments on Tribals at Retro Pre-Release Event

Actor Vijay Deverakonda has found himself at the center of controversy after comments he made during the Retro pre-release event were perceived as offensive toward tribal communities. A Hyderabad-based lawyer, Lal Chauhan, has filed a police complaint against the actor, sparking widespread debate.

The controversy arose when Vijay addressed the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 28 tourists and left many others injured. While strongly condemning the attack and criticizing Pakistan and the terrorists involved, Vijay used a comparison that drew criticism. He remarked, “India doesn’t even need to attack Pakistan because Pakistanis themselves are fed up with their government and will attack them if this continues. Asalu 500 years back tribals kokkutunnatu, veelu buddhi lekunda, minimum common sense lekunda chese panulu.” (Translation: “They behave like how tribals fought 500 years ago — without intelligence or basic common sense.”)

The statement triggered backlash, with many expressing disappointment over the use of the term “tribals” in a seemingly negative light. Social media users and activists accused the actor of disrespecting Scheduled Tribes and demanded an apology.

In response to the criticism, Vijay Deverakonda released a heartfelt apology letter clarifying his intent. He wrote, “There was absolutely no intention to hurt or target any community, especially our Scheduled Tribes, who I deeply respect and consider an integral part of our country.” He further added, “I was speaking about unity—how India is one, our people are one, and how we must move forward together. In what world would I, while urging us to stand united as a country, deliberately discriminate against any group of Indians?”

The actor also reflected on his past visit to Pahalgam during the shooting of Kushi two years ago, sharing his emotional connection to the location now affected by the terror attack.

While the apology has calmed some of the backlash, the incident continues to stir conversations about sensitivity in public discourse and the responsibilities of celebrities when addressing national issues.
