The Ganges River holds a special place in the hearts of millions, revered as one of the most auspicious rivers in India. Ganga Saptami, a significant festival, marks the divine descent of Goddess Ganga to bless her devotees. Celebrated annually on the Saptami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Vaisakha, this day holds immense spiritual importance.

Date and Puja Timings: This year, Ganga Saptami falls on May 14, according to Drik Panchang. The Madhyahna Muhurat for Ganga Saptami is observed from 10:56 AM to 1:39 PM on May 14.

Rituals: Devotees commence the day with an early morning dip in the sacred waters of the Ganges, followed by lighting a diya and releasing it into the river as a symbolic offering. Garland and sweets are offered to Goddess Ganga, followed by a special evening aarti to seek her blessings. In the evening, the ritual of Deep Daan, where devotees offer diya to the goddess, is performed. Additionally, acts of charity such as donating food, water, and clothing to the less fortunate are undertaken. Chanting of the Panchakshari Mantra and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra while seated by the riverbank is also a common practice.

Significance: The Ganges River is believed to cleanse one’s sins and bestow a positive outlook on life upon those who take a holy dip in its waters. Special pujas are organized in revered locations such as Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Triveni Sangam. Ganga Saptami is also known as Jahnu Saptami in certain regions, further highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of this auspicious day.
